CLOUT

Construct: Noun, Verb
Definition: A heavy blow with the hand (or object), to strike.
Use: I gave him a clout of the hurley.
I struck him with the hurley.
Derivation: Irish 'Clabhta' - a blow with the open hand. (Dineen)
and 'A heavy blow with some object in the hand' - now more usual. (Ó h-Éaluithe)
and 'Clout' - to hit, especially with open hand. Old English 'Clút'. (Concise Oxford Dictionary)
and 'Clout' - to strike a person heavily. Middle English onwards, now colloquial. (Partridge)
