To hold on to the tailboard of a moving vehicle.
Use:
He was lagging behind the lorry but fell off and was hurt.
He was holding onto the tailboard of the lorry but fell off and was hurt.
Derivation:
Uknown, but note English 'Lag' - to fall behind, hence stay behind.
