Definition: Small fish - minnow, pinkeen, a thorn-back. Tawrneens are caught either in net or by worm tied to end of string.
Derivation: Unknown, but note thorn on spine of fish and 'een' diminuitive in Irish. And note 'Tairn√≠n' or 'Tairng√≠n' - a small nail, a thorn-back. (√ď h-√Čaluithe).
